| Shocking Result in Glasgow East By-Election 25th Jul 2008 | ||||||||||||||||||||||||
In the face of it, it would have been quite a good showing from Labour. Polling just under 11,000 votes, only coming in second despite the massive unpopularity of both Gordon Brown and the party in general, it could have been a victory in any other consituency. But this was not any other consituency, this was Labour's Heartland, one of the safest seats in the country, where they had a ridiculous majority. The BBC Described it as "one of the biggest political upsets in recent years", in an interview with Des Brown MP (The Secretary of State for Scotland) who went on television this morning, claiming that Gordon Brown was the best person to steer us through these difficult economic times, global slowdown, yada yada yada. This by-election showed that people are frankly fed up of Labour's lying through their teeth. Gordon Brown has not seen us through internationally bad economic times, he's seen us through internationally good economic times, during which he did nothing at all to prepare us, and had no foresight about the bad times coming ahead. Our taxes are higher, our business are failing due to government legislation, prices are rising, house prices are falling, petrol is unprecedently expensive, and Gordon Brown has borrowed billions of pounds, year on year, to fund more government workers, and more red tape. Labour have won Glasgow East (and its predecessor, Glasgow Provan, every single year since Glasgow Provean was first created in 1995. Until now. Until 11 years of economic incompetance, until massive de-centralisation, until all this. Now, the Liberal Democrat vote fell, and the Conservative vote went nowhere during the election, which was always to be expected. This isn't exactly a Tory seat, and a lot of the Liberal Democrat vote went to the SNP, especially squeezed due to the intense campaigning by both Labour and the SNP. The Liberal Democrats are the only party who are offering real change for britain. If elected, we will lower taxes in the long-term, cut the red tape for doctors and nurses, free up teachers to teach as they please, embark on a massive de-centralisation program, give power back to local councils, and protect the civil liberties of each citizen, all of which Labour have massively failed to do. |
