Ah, the Tories. It hasn't escaped the thoughts of many a commentator that their recent success in the polls has been on the back of David Cameron behaving much more like a Liberal Democrat than a Conservative, but this is only part true. The Conservatives have been sounding more like Liberal Democrats than Conservatives. Rest assured, they've been voting like Conservatives. The Liberal Democrats are, have always been, and always will be, the only mainstream party in the UK to take a stance against Global Warming. The scientific evidence says not only that Global Warming is occurring, it places man and his actions firmly as the cause. The Tories, seeing that the Green issue had become popular amongst voters in recent years, suddenly decided that they were a green party too, and promptly all decided to cycle to work and tell everyone about it (whilst having their chauffers deliver their briefcases and formal shoes) and to oppose the third runway at Heathrow (whilst actually not actually bothering to vote to stop its expansion). The Guardian lead recently with the headline "Tories to Block Third Runway at Heathrow" [Source], in which David Cameron responded with quotes that would make Friends of the Earth look like Jeremy Clarkson. "The truth is: it's not that we can't afford to go green - it's that we can't afford not to go green." The crux of the matter though, is that once you get past the soundbites and the overly sarcastic tone of this article so far, the Tories words melt into nothingness. One could be forgiven for thinking that David Cameron did something as mad as voted against the expansion of Heathrow. Perhaps one could hope that he even tabled the motion against the expansion, or at least one of his cabinet did. Well, no. But Norman Baker, the Lib Dem Shadow Transport Secretary did, and I'll forgive you just one more time if you thought that David Cameron and his Tories voted for it in droves. Don't be so silly. Our bill was defeated, with 66 votes for, and 265 votes against. Every single Lib Dem MP who voted voted for our motion (and 89% turned out to vote) to stop the third runway, and all but two Labour MPs who voted did so to keep the plans for the third runway. [Source] And the Tories? Nope. Three Tory MPs turned out to vote. Not three percent, just three. Where was David Cameron? Did he stand with us, as we helped each other help the country? Was he perhaps persuading other Tory MPs to come and vote, and forgot the right day? Maybe he was just out buying more mirrors and filling up his smoke machine, but he certianly wasnt doing anything actually useful against the fight for the third runway, and voting against the Heathrow Expansion. The Liberal Democrats arent all talk, we honestly beleive in the Green cause, and we'll go one better. We'll vote the way we talk, too. We are the only party to truly uphold Green principles in the UK today, and remain the only True Alternative to Labour and the Tories. |
