Strikes and Strikeability II

Quite what I thought I was doing yesterday, tempting fate there. I said that not even Brown would be daft enough to lead us into protectionism, and our Government continue to surprise me by exceeding my wildest nightmares.
The Government will attempt, apparantly, to seek a change in the law, saying that foreign EU companies cannot bring in workers, undercutting the potential wages of British workers. Showing exactly how split Labour are over this whole issue, the most sense came from Lord Mandelson (I know, I'm pinching myself too), when he said:
- Lord Mandelson, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform
And he's right. There are twice as many British people working in the EU than there are EU citizens (not British people, obviously) working here. Nick Clegg summed it up perfectly.
- Nick Clegg, Leader of the Liberal Democrats
We cannot afford to stoop to protectionism to win cheap votes from the working class and the trade unions. We cannot afford to stand alone in these horrific economic times, and standing against the EU, and restricting trade and the movement of labour will ultimately be shooting ourselves in the collective feet.
