Abortion Ads on TV
27th Mar 2009 11:35:22
I read today that adverts for condoms and abortion will be shown on television under new proposals by the Committee of Advertising Practice. Now, advertisements for condoms I have no objection to, in fact, I think it's a great idea. We have a massive problem with teenage pregnancy in this country, and condoms will help that.
But advertisements for abortion on television? Currently in this country an abortion can be performed at up to 24 weeks, at which point a baby can survive if given birth to. I myself have a cousin who was born at 22 weeks, and it's sickening to know that the law says that she could legally be aborted.
With the massively exceptional circumstances of rape, incest, or pregnancies which constitute a danger to the mother's health, I can't see why abortion past 4-8 weeks is legal at all. We live in a free first-world country in which every citizen can get access to contraception and use it freely.
It's a case of taking personal responsibility, and not a feminist or anti-feminist issue. If pregnancy would be the end of the world for a couple, then they can freely not have sex, which has a 0% chance of resulting in pregnancy. If pregnancy would just be unwanted, but they're willing to take the risk if it's really low, then they can use the pill and condoms for as close as close can get to a 0% chance.
Now, the morning after pill and stem cell research are also an issue, and although it might seem inconsistant with the rest of this post, I have no problem with it. It's all a case of when an embryo becomes a baby, and totally subjective, I'll admit.
The current limit is 24 weeks, and there I think most people would look at the baby and say "it's a baby", then. But, for example, 2 days after conception, I, and I expect most other people, wouldn't. People must take responsibility for their actions, without having to resort to abortion. If pregnancy would be the end of the world for a couple, they're free to not have sex, they're free to use condoms and the pill and any other contraception they choose.
On a completely unrelated note, the Tories have been useful this week and one of their MEPs has made a fantastic speech in the EU attacking our useless Prime Minister. Watch it.
